Online Ozone Analyzer for Water – OzoSense
The OzoSense Online Dissolved Ozone Analyzer and Monitor from Pi for the measurement of the ozone concentration in water, is designed to be simple to install and operate, and offers unrivalled stability, accuracy and precision, whilst offering excellent value for money.
The OzoSense range of online dissolved ozone analyzers and dissolved ozone monitors utilize the very latest and best ozone sensors available in the world today.
The OzoSense sensor is a membraned device which is insensitive to changing pH, uses no reagents, is extremely stable, and has reduced maintenance and reduced whole life costs.
The online dissolved ozone monitor sensors connect to a range of electronic instrument controllers from Pi resulting in world class online dissolved ozone monitoring and controlling solutions.

The OzoSense online dissolved ozone monitor is bufferless and reagent free, meaning it has a low total cost of ownership and with maintenance intervals for up to 6 months, it is fast becoming the instrument of choice for the engineer who wants the best online residual ozone monitor at the best price.
The OzoSense online dissolved ozone monitors are currently installed on many applications including:
- Bottled Water Plants – ozone monitors
- Ozone Dosing Control – ozone controllers
- Remote Sites
- Cooling Towers
- Food Preparation
- Hospitals
- Secondary Ozonation
- Wastewater Ozonation
Anywhere you have a requirement to measure online residual ozone in water is a suitable application for the OzoSense ozone monitor. The OzoSense range is particularly suited to working in sites where reliability and ease of use are most important. The sensors are resistant to the presence of tensides making them suitable for use in many washing applications.
AutoFlush – As described elsewhere, the OzoSense can come equipped to automatically clean itself at user defined intervals with all the benefits of no operator intervention. The AutoFlush is particularly useful in food preparation, pulp and paper, and many applications where there is likely to be a build up of solids in the sample.
Dissolved Ozone Analyzer Options – Such as communications, relays and controls.
Multi-Sensor Systems – The whole range of OzoSense online dissolved ozone monitors and online dissolved ozone controllers can be fitted with additional sensors such as more ozone sensors, turbidity, pH and many others. Such flexibility can save considerable sums of money when putting together and monitoring or controlling solutions for ozone.
The OzoSense online residual ozone sensor from Pi is a two electrode electochemical sensor. The gold and silver halide electrodes are housed in an electrolyte and seperated from the water containing the ozone by a gas permeable membrane. This membrane allows the dissolved gas to travel through the membrane where it undergoes a redox reaction and the current generated is proportional to the amount of ozone in the water.

Ozone Monitor FAQs
What sensor ranges are available for ozone?
OzoSense is available in 0.05-0.2, 0.05-0.5, 0.05-2, 0.05-5, 0.05-10 and 0-20 mg/l (ppm) ranges.
Is it possible to measure ozone in seawater?
Ozonating seawater is quite different from fresh water, as the ozone reacts with bromine salts in seawater to produce bromine. We can supply a total bromine sensor for this application; please contact a member of the team if you are interested in this.
How often does my ozone sensor need calibrating?
Our ozone sensors have a very low rate of drift, so the frequency of calibration depends upon the needs of your application. Different customers are known to calibrate weekly or monthly.
How often does the ozone electrolyte need changing?
Changing the electrolyte every 3-6 months is recommended.
Is it possible to measure ozone if there are tensides (detergents) present?
Yes, you can; our ozone sensors have been designed to be resistant to the effects on tensides.
I want to return the sample to process. Can I operate the OzoSense at an overpressure to do this?
A closed flow cell can be supplied with OzoSense, and the sensor can withstand overpressure of 1 bar; this pressure must be constant to ensure reliable operation of the sensor. However, in most cases 1 bar is insufficient to return a sample to a process stream, so the majority of our customers use our open flow cells.
If the pH changes, will it affect my ozone reading?
Our membrane sensors are designed to be pH resistant, and so changes within the pH range of the sensor will have a negligible effect.
How long can the membranes and electrolyte be stored?
Both the membrane and the electrolyte can be stored for two years in a cool, dry place.
Are there any interferences?
There are know interferences with chlorine dioxide (<7%) and residual chlorine (<2%). If you have any concerns, please get in touch with a member of our team and we will be happy to discuss this with you.
What are the MoCs?
The sensor is constructed from PVC and stainless steel, while our open flow cells are manufactured out of perspex.
What temperature range will the ozone sensor work in?
The OzoSense will operate at temperatures above 3°C (38°F) and below 50°C (122°F).
Why does the ozone sensor have no zero adjustment?
A zero adjustment is not necessary because the sensor always operates at a positive voltage. Because of this any drift on the zero is negligible compared to the operating voltage.
If the temperature varies, what will happen?
Our sensors have an internal thermistor that allows for automatic temperature compensation, so there is no need to worry about temperature variation.
What is the best way to calibrate my ozone sensor?
Many of our customers use handheld meters to determine the chlorine concentration for calibration, generally using colorimetric DPD analysis. These are available from a wide variety of suppliers.
I am going to take a sample to do a test. What do I need to be aware of?
Three things; timing, location and execution. Take your sample when the concentration is varying as little as possible, take it from the same location as the sensor and follow the instructions for your handheld device carefully.
During the calibration process, the analyzer has warned me that the sample isn't stable. Why?
The analyzer monitors the stability of the probe signal during the calibration process. If this varies by more than 10% during the calibration countdown, then the analyzer will not accept the result. This is to prevent the calibration routine from introducing inaccuracies into the sensor reading.
What is Ozone?
Ozone is an inorganic chemical with the formula O3. In time it breaks down to O2.
Why would ozone be used to disinfect water?
Ozone is a useful disinfectant for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is a very powerful oxidant which makes it highly effective for destroying pathogens, even those known to be resistant to chlorine (such as Giardia and Cryptosporidia). Secondly, it has the ability to react with and remove manganese from water, which is very useful in specific cases.
Why is ozone considered to be a better choice for some applications?
Because it is made up solely of oxygen atoms, disinfecting with ozone leaves no taste or odor. This, and its ability to break down urea, means that ozone disinfection does not leave behind by-products such as organochlorines or combined chlorine compounds that some users wish to avoid.
Is an ozone monitor the same as an ozone analyzer or an ozone controller?
The terms ‘monitor’ and ‘analyzer’ are basically interchangeable and refer to an instrument that can measure/display certain parameters. A ‘controller’, as the name suggests, refers to an instrument that also has onboard control functionality. All Pi systems can have this functionality, and so an OzoSense can be considered a monitor/analyzer and also a controller.
